Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
