2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last autumn.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had shown the necessity for a clearer direction.

The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news echoes a similar move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the entire message from Ismailer's communication:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our players.

Our confidence in this project increases every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the new Studio Head of the team. Following several months of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most popular franchises in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in welcoming Ben next week. We are all eager to continue seeing the evolution of the game in the time to ahead.

David

Experience of the New Head

Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description explains. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or aim high, gamble everything, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an official debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can anticipate additional details as production continues.
